Internet in the Fast Lane

What would life be like if all Internet speed was equal, regardless of how high up the company is? This isn't just a crazy idea. This is a reality that is achievable due to a term called net neutrality.

Cnet defines net neutrality as "the principle that all traffic on the internet should be treated equally, regardless of whether you're checking Facebook, posting pictures to Instagram or streaming movies from Netflix or Amazon."

These companies also can't favor their own content over other companies if they buy a company. For example, "AT&T, which is trying to buy Time Warner, or Comcast, which owns NBC Universal, can't favor their own content over a competitor's".

Net neutrality would allow all companies to have the same amount of speed, regardless of status in the industry.

I believe that net neutrality is beneficial to society. It allows all companies to be on the same playing field. It also discourages paying more to have faster internet speed. This all started under the Obama administration in 2015.

According to Cnet, "the FCC adopted rules to protect these principles". And it prohibited broadband providers from "blocking or slowing traffic and banned them from offering so-called fast lanes to companies willing to pay extra to reach consumers more quickly than competitors".

Each company should have the same amount of advantages. It isn't fair to consumers who can't afford to pay more for faster internet speed. There needs to be an even playing field otherwise it will cause consumers to get angry. Also blocking and slowing traffic for the internet should stay prohibited. It is wrong in my opinion and should not be tolerated.

Net neutrality lets companies challenge each other for consumers on an even playing field.

Net neutrality is in trouble due to the fact that the FCC repealed the 2015 net neutrality regulations. According to Cnet, "This means that today there are no rules that prevent broadband providers from slowing or blocking your access to the internet. And there's nothing to stop these companies from favoring their own services over a competitor's service".

We need to get net neutrality back and convince the FCC it is necessary. Internet speed should not be dependent on who can afford it more, which company deserves faster speed, and which services will prevent consumers from going to other companies. This needs to be fair and available to every single person.

Consumers shouldn't have to pay more for companies to provide faster internet speed (it should be even).

Net neutrality supporters argue that this "especially hurts startups, which can't afford such fees". This is important because startup companies will have a harder time to get the company going when big companies have most consumers hooked onto them.

Net neutrality needs to come into play and the FCC needs to realize this is for the better. Companies will not suffer, as consumers who can't afford to pay more will gladly go back to the company once net neutrality comes into play. This will create two equal fast lanes and consumers will be happier.

I believe that net neutrality is a beneficial thing to implement into our internet and stop companies from battling each other and making consumers pay more than necessary.
