Are Waist Trainers Dangerous or Helpful?

Kylie Jenner Wearing a Black Waist Trainer

Waist trainers have been popular lately in the fitness world. Most celebrities sport them in their Instagram pictures, such as the Kardashian family. One concern that many people have is the question of it being potentially dangerous. So, are waist trainers healthy or dangerous? I am here with research to prove that waist trainers are indeed dangerous.

Think back to the 1800's Victorian era, the most popular accessory was a corset. Corsets are designed, just like waist trainers, to compress the tummy, slim the waist, and enhance the bust area. This slims down the sides and front of the torso, making it hard to breathe when tightened enough or worn for an extensive period of time.

If corsets and waist trainers are worn periodically, the results can be dangerous. The results that you can obtain are not limited to just a skinny waist. According to Kenny Thapoung from Marie Claire magazine, waist trainers can result in "crushed organs, compressed lungs, and fractured ribs".

Corsets cause the organs to compress.

Waist trainers may slim out your frame, but the health risks are not worth it. There are other healthier options to maintain a small waist. These options are, but not limited to, core based workouts and eating clean & green. Spot toning, also known as working out a specific area to tone it, does not always work perfectly. We cannot specifically choose one area to tone only. We can only train as much as we can to get better results. Remember that exercise and diet is the only way to naturally achieve a small waist. There is always liposuction and other sculpting surgeries, but those can cost a pretty penny. Every place is different, but according to realself.com, liposuction can cost anywhere from "$1,550 - $10,075 with an average cost of $6,050". It is way cheaper to change your diet and regularly exercise. Much healthier than risking your health and life for a small waist.

Here is my helpful advice: do not risk your health for beauty standards that are potentially hazardous to your body.
